Tavarish’s post today of the Bugatti Cougar left me to wonder: would
you
ever buy a replica car?
Obviously the fit and finish will be mediocre at best, but would you be willing to give that up so it looks like you own a particularly luxurious or exotic automobile? Are you buying this replica car to impress others, or just so you can act you have such a special vehicle?
With the Mercury Veyron, you also need to consider that you can buy new, impressive, legit car for the roughly $60,000 price.
So be genuineous, or fake it ‘til you make it? I’m honestly curious . . .

Depends on what counts as a replica. Do these count as replicas?

There are certain cars which, today, are simply not obtainable anymore (think of the Cobra for example). If the replica is of certain quality and of a specific car, yeah, I’d rock it. Not that ‘Veyron’ though.

BmanUltima's car still hasn't been fixed yet, he'll get on it tomorrow, honest.

I’d get a Stratos replica, and build it myself.
Then it’d be better fit and finish than the real thing. More reliable too.
sm70- why not Duesenberg?

Unless we’re counting an Icon Bronco, Eagle Speedster, or Signer Porsche (which are more ground-up restomods) absolutely and unequivically no. There’s not a single price point at which I’d buy a fake version of a cooler car that serves no purpose other than to fool people into thinking you have something you don’t. There are very, very, very few cars that I actively have distaste for, but replicas are stupid.

You must be the only person in the history of the internet to choose that pic as opposed to what follows. Kudos for originality.

If the replica is based off a vehicle with a tubular chassis/frame, yes. If not, fuck no.

I’m waiting for them to start doing “02 Series”, E24, and E30 replicas the same way they do ‘67 Mustang replica frames. Sign me up.

Been there, done that, twice. A good replica can be not only cheaper, but lighter, faster, better handling, less expensive to maintain, and a whole lot less stressful when on the verge of totaling it on track.. I would only do a full race ready tube chassis because I hate body “repackages” although the Corvette ones ain’t bad looking.

I respect your opinion but I think those look terrible.
